Loss Prevention
This Is What It Looks Like When Your Insurer Works for You.
Most insurance companies wait for something to go wrong and then process the paperwork. BCM takes a different approach. As a mutual insurer owned by our policyholders, we have every reason to help you avoid claims in the first place.
The Mutual Difference
Prevention Over Paperwork.
Lower claims mean a stronger company for all of our members, and that starts with prevention.
This is also how we work to keep premiums as stable as possible. Severe weather and climate-driven losses are pushing rates up across the Canadian insurance market. The most direct way to soften that pressure is to help our members avoid losses in the first place. Fewer claims paid out of the mutual pool means more stable rates for every policyholder.
Our in-house Loss Prevention Team is one of the things that sets BCM apart. These are not call centre agents or third-party contractors. They are BCM employees who live in the Niagara Region, know the local risks, and show up at your property with the tools and training to help you stay ahead of trouble.

What We Look At
Every Property Tells a Different Story.
Homes
We look at the things most likely to cause a claim: your electrical panel, furnace, roof, basement moisture, and drainage around the foundation. If something needs attention, you will know about it before it becomes a problem.
Farms
Your house, barns, outbuildings, machinery storage, livestock housing: we walk through all of it. Thermal imaging comes standard on farm visits because hidden electrical faults are one of the leading causes of barn fires.
Commercial Properties
Whether you run a retail shop, a warehouse, or a manufacturing facility, your risks are different from a homeowner's. We look at fire safety, security, equipment condition, and public liability so you can focus on running your business.
Practical Guidance
Climate-resilience tips for Niagara homes.
The risks that drive the most home insurance claims in this region are predictable. So are the things you can do to reduce them.
Water
Basement flooding is the most common and most expensive Niagara home claim. Install a sump pump with battery backup, fit a backwater valve on your sewer line, grade soil away from your foundation, and keep gutters and downspouts clear so rainwater is directed well away from the house.
Wind & Severe Weather
Roofs over 15 years old are more vulnerable in wind events. Have yours inspected, replace missing or damaged shingles, and trim or remove tree limbs that overhang the house or sit close to power lines. Anchor or store outdoor furniture and tools when severe weather is forecast.
Winter
Insulate pipes that run along exterior walls or in unheated spaces so they do not freeze and burst. Add attic insulation and ventilation to prevent ice damming on the roof. Keep the home heated above 13°C even when you are away, and have someone check on it during long absences.
Fire
Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every floor and test them twice a year. If your home is 30 years or older, have the electrical system inspected by a licensed electrician. Clear dry brush and combustible materials away from the exterior, and keep a working extinguisher in the kitchen and garage.
These are starting points. A Loss Prevention visit gives you advice specific to your home and the conditions around it.

Frequently Asked
Loss Prevention, answered.
-
Is BCM’s Loss Prevention service free?
Yes. Loss Prevention visits, risk assessments, thermal scans, and written reports are included with your BCM policy at no extra charge. There is no service fee, no upsell, and no membership tier you have to upgrade to.
-
What does a BCM Loss Prevention visit include?
A BCM Loss Prevention Associate visits your property in person and walks through it with you. They look for risks specific to your home, farm, or business: water infiltration points, electrical hazards, fire risks, missing safety devices, structural concerns, and signs of wear that can lead to claims. You receive practical recommendations in writing and any follow-up support you need to act on them.
-
Can Loss Prevention help me reduce my insurance premium?
Indirectly yes, and sometimes directly. Preventing claims is the most effective way to keep premiums stable over time. The mutual model means fewer claims paid out translates into more stable rates for every policyholder. Some specific risk mitigations (eligible safety devices, structural improvements) can also unlock direct discounts on your policy. Your advisor can walk through which apply to your situation.
-
What climate-related risks does BCM help homeowners prepare for?
Loss Prevention covers the climate-driven risks that show up most often in Niagara: water (basement flooding, sewer backup, overland water), wind and severe weather (roof age, tree management, debris), winter (frozen pipes, ice damming), and fire (electrical safety, vegetation management). Recommendations are specific to your property and the conditions around it, not a generic checklist.
