Frequently Asked
Claims questions, answered.
-
How do I file a claim with BCM?
To file a claim, call BCM at (905) 735-1234 during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM), or contact your insurance advisor directly. For losses outside business hours that need immediate response, the same number routes you to our after-hours claims service. You can also start a claim through the form on this page.
-
How quickly will BCM respond after I file a claim?
Our goal is to acknowledge every claim within one business day and have an adjuster in contact with you shortly after, typically within 48 hours for most home and auto losses. Major weather events can stretch those timelines, but claims that need urgent attention (water damage in progress, a vehicle out of commission, a home that is not safely habitable) are triaged first.
-
Will my premium go up after a claim?
Sometimes, but not always. The impact depends on the type of loss, the claim amount, your previous claims history, and whether the loss reflects an underlying risk that has changed. A single weather-related home claim against many years of clean history usually has a smaller effect than a pattern of claims. BCM’s mutual model means we are not under pressure to penalize loyal policyholders to satisfy shareholders.
-
What should I do immediately after a loss or damage?
First, make sure everyone is safe and call emergency services if needed. Then take steps to prevent further damage (shut off water at the main valve, cover broken windows, board up if necessary), but only if it is safe to do so. Document everything with photos, keep receipts for any temporary repairs or emergency expenses, and contact BCM as soon as you can. Do not throw away damaged items until an adjuster has seen them.
-
How does BCM handle major weather event claims?
Major weather events (a regional ice storm, widespread flooding, a windstorm system) trigger our catastrophe response. We bring in additional adjuster capacity, prioritize claims by severity, and coordinate with Farm Mutual Re for additional resources when the event affects many policyholders at once. The 40-mutual Ontario network behind BCM was built specifically so that no single member company faces a major event alone.
